Abstract Introduction mass contamination by the new coronavirus caused enough damage for the pandemic to extend indefinitely Objective the objective of this study was to analyze the emotional factors acquired by students from a dentistry course during the COVID-19 pandemic period and the influences related to the resumption of face-to-face activities. Material and method it is an observational, cross-sectional and analytical research conducted at a public university in the state of Pará, Brazil. A research questionnaire, prepared by the authors and validated by the ethics committee of the Federal University of Pará, was applied to the academic community for a period of three months (November 2020 to January 2021). The analysis was performed using the Excel program, Kappa statistics and the Chi-squared test, whose results were presented as frequency and percentage. Result a total of 188 dental students participated in the research. The findings proved to be in accordance with the hypothesis generated by the researchers, about 19.2% had emotional crises and 3.7% increase in the lockdown period. As for the expectations for care services, there was an increase in the oppressive state of psychic crises (anxiety, stress, anger, fear), considered influential in the cognition of behavioral traits during post-pandemic care. Conclusion the study identified that the emotional changes acquired in the pandemic outbreak had a negative impact on student performance; however, depressive symptoms were expressed in graduating students.

Resumo Introdução a contaminação em massa pelo novo coronavírus promoveu danos suficientes para que a pandemia se estendesse por tempo indeterminado. Objetivo analisar os fatores emocionais adquiridos por estudantes do curso de odontologia no período pandêmico COVID-19 e as influências relacionadas ao retorno das atividades presenciais. Material e método pesquisa observacional, transversal e analítica, realizada em uma universidade pública do estado do Pará. Foi aplicado na comunidade acadêmica um questionário de pesquisa, próprio, validado pelo comitê de ética da Universidade Federal do Pará, por um período de 3 meses (novembro de 2020 a janeiro de 2021). Para a análise foi pelo programa Excel, estatísticas Kappa e o teste Qui-quadrado exibidos por frequência e porcentagem. Resultado participaram da pesquisa 188 alunos de odontologia. Os resultados obtidos na pesquisa foram de acordo com a hipótese gerada pelos pesquisadores, cerca de 19,2% e 3,7%, apresentaram crises emocionais elevando-as no período de confinamento. Quanto as expectativas para o atendimento, houve aumento de estado opressivo de crises psíquicas (ansiedade, estresse, raiva, medo), consideradas influentes na cognição dos traços comportamentais durante o atendimento pós pandemia. Conclusão o estudo identificou que as alterações emocionais adquiridas no surto pandêmico desencadearam impacto negativo no rendimento estudantil, todavia, a sintomatologia depressiva esteve expressa em acadêmicos concluintes.

Abstract Introduction fluoride toothpaste is widely used by the population. Objective dentifrices with a high concentration of sodium fluoride and the presence of tricalcium phosphate were developed, providing additional protection to patients vulnerable to the development of caries. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different dentifrices on the surface and internal hardness and enamel wear after artificial caries, pH cycling, and toothbrushing. Material and method enamel blocks (4x4 mm) were obtained from 20 bovine teeth. The specimens were submitted to artificial caries lesion and then to pH cycling and brushing according to the dentifrice: Colgate Total 12 and Clinpro + Tricalcium Phosphate. Result after this period, they were submitted to analysis of superficial and internal hardness and profilometry. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was performed. The data obtained were evaluated by one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to evaluate the mineral recovery and profilometry, and two-way repeated measures ANOVA to evaluate the superficial and internal hardness. Conclusion analyzing the surface hardness, after caries induction, there was a significant reduction in hardness that was partially recovered regardless of the dentifrice used. For internal hardness, Clinpro obtained lower values on the control side and up to 90 micrometers on the test side. As for profilometry, Colgate Total 12 showed greater wear when compared to Clinpro. It was concluded that Clinpro promoted lower internal hardness, however, Colgate Total 12 resulted in greater surface wear of tooth enamel.

Resumo Introdução dentifrícios fluoretados são amplamente utilizados pela população. Foram desenvolvidos dentifrícios com alta concentração de fluoreto de sódio e presença de tricálcio fosfato, fornecendo proteção adicional a pacientes vulneráveis ao desenvolvimento da cárie. Objetivo o objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a influência de diferentes dentifrícios na dureza superficial, interna e desgaste do esmalte após cárie artificial, ciclagem de pH e escovação. Material e método blocos de esmalte (4x4 mm) foram obtidos a partir de 20 dentes bovinos. Os espécimes foram submetidos à lesão de cárie artificial e, em seguida, à ciclagem de pH e escovação de acordo com o dentifrício: Colgate Total 12 e Clinpro + Tricálcio Fosfato. Após este período, foram submetidos à análise de dureza superficial e interna e perfilometria. Foi realizada microscopia eletrônica de varredura. Resultado os dados obtidos foram avaliados por ANOVA um critério para avaliar a recuperação mineral e perfilometria, ANOVA dois critérios medidas repetidas para avaliar a dureza superficial e interna. Conclusão analisando a dureza superficial, após a indução da cárie houve uma redução significativa na dureza que foi parcialmente recuperada independente do dentifrício utilizado. Para dureza interna, Clinpro obteve valores menores no lado controle e até 90 micrômetros no lado teste. Quanto à perfilometria, o Colgate Total 12 apresentou maior desgaste quando comparado ao Clinpro. Concluiu-se que Clinpro promoveu menor dureza interna, porém, o Colgate Total 12 resultou em maior desgaste superficial do esmalte dentário.

Abstract Introduction with the technological advance in dentistry, light-polymerized three-dimensional (3D) printing resins had become an alternative for the manufacture of occlusal splint splints. Objective the present study aimed to analyze the flexural strength of a resin for 3D printing compared to conventional acrylic resins (chemically activated and thermally activated), under the influence of thermocycling. Material and method 60 specimens were made, which were distributed in six experimental groups (n = 10), according to the resin employed (chemically activated acrylic resin, thermally activated acrylic resin and 3D printing resin) and the treatment received (control and thermocycling). The specimens were submitted to flexural strength by the three-point flexural test. Result data analysis showed that the material factor (<0.0001) and the thermocycling factor (p = 0.0096) influenced flexural strength, however, the interaction between the two factors did not (p = 0.9728). Conclusion it was concluded that 3D printing resins presented the lowest flexural resistance to acrylic resins, especially when submitted to thermocycling.

Resumo Introdução com o avanço tecnológico dentro da odontologia, as resinas fotopolimerizáveis para impressão tridimensional (3D) se tornaram uma alternativa para a fabricação de dispositivos interoclusais. Objetivo o presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar a resistência flexural de uma resina para impressão tridimensional comparada com resinas acrílicas convencionais (quimicamente ativada e termicamente ativada), sob a influência da termociclagem. Material e método foram confeccionados 60 corpos de prova, que foram distribuídos aleatoriamente em seis grupos experimentais (n=10), de acordo com a resina utilizada (resina acrílica ativada quimicamente, resina acrílica ativada termicamente e resina para impressão 3D) e com o tratamento recebido (controle e termociclagem). Os corpos de prova foram submetidos ao ensaio de flexão de três pontos para determinação da resistência flexural. Resultado a análise dos dados demonstrou que o fator material (<0.0001) e o fator termociclagem (p=0.0096) influenciaram a resistência flexural, entretanto, a interação entre os dois fatores não (p=0.9728). Conclusão deste modo podemos concluir que a resina para impressão 3D apresentou desempenho inferior às resinas acrílicas, especialmente quando submetida a termociclagem.

Abstract Introduction Periodontitis is an infectious-inflammatory disease resulting from microbial dysbiosis and host response that leads to the destruction of tooth support tissues, including periodontal collagen fibers, which may culminate in tooth loss. Objective To evaluate the behavior of periodontal collagen fibers during the progression of induced experimental periodontitis in rats. Material and method Twelve Wistar rats were distributed into groups: Control (C), 14-days Experimental Periodontitis (PE-14d), 21-days Experimental Periodontitis (PE-21d) and 42-days Experimental Periodontitis (PE-42d). At day 0, the animals of group C were euthanized. At the same day, the remaining animals were submitted to the installation of a cotton ligature around the lower left first molar for the induction of experimental periodontitis. The animals were euthanized at 14 (PE-14d), 21 (PE-21d) and 42 (PE-42d) days after the installation of ligature. Histological processing of the hemi-mandibles was performed and the sections underwent histochemical reaction using picro-sirius red. The descriptive qualitative analysis was performed under polarized light microscopy, in the dental furcation region, evidencing the fibers of the periodontal ligament. Result Group C exhibited thick and oriented bundles of mature collagen fibers, consistent with a normal appearance. The groups with experimental periodontitis exhibited severe tissue disruption, with immature and thinner collagen fibers, with such conditions being more exacerbated in the PE-14d and PE-21d groups. Conclusion The early stages of periodontitis present acute response, and therefore result in rapid destruction of periodontal support tissues and potentially impair fibrillogenesis and collagen restructuring in the periodontal ligament.

Resumo Introdução A periodontite é uma doença infecto-inflamatória, resultante da disbiose microbiana e da resposta do hospedeiro, que leva à destruição dos tecidos de suporte dentário, inclusive das fibras colágenas periodontais, podendo culminar na perda do elemento dental. Objetivo Avaliar o comportamento das fibras colágenas periodontais durante a progressão da periodontite experimental induzida em ratos. Material e método Doze ratos Wistar foram distribuídos nos grupos: Controle (C), Periodontite Experimental 14-dias (PE-14d), Periodontite Experimental 21-dias (PE-21d) e Periodontite Experimental 42-dias (PE-42d). No dia 0, os animais do grupo C foram eutanasiados. Neste mesmo dia, os animais remanescentes foram submetidos à instalação de uma ligadura de algodão ao redor do primeiro molar inferior esquerdo para indução da periodontite experimental. Tais animais foram eutanasiados aos 14 (PE-14d), 21 (PE-21d) e 42 (PE-42d) dias após a instalação da ligadura. Executou-se o processamento histológico das hemimandíbulas e as secções foram submetidas à reação histoquímica pelo vermelho picro-sirius. A análise qualitativa descritiva foi realizada sob microscopia de luz polarizada, na região de furca dental, evidenciando as fibras do ligamento periodontal. Resultado O grupo C exibiu feixes espessos e orientados de fibras colágenas maduras, condizentes com aspecto de normalidade. Os grupos com periodontite experimental exibiram desestruturação tecidual severa, com fibras colágenas imaturas e de menor espessura, sendo tais condições mais exacerbadas nos grupos PE-14d e PE-21d. Conclusão As fases iniciais da periodontite apresentam caráter agudo e, portanto, resultam na rápida destruição dos tecidos periodontais de suporte, prejudicando potencialmente a fibrilogênese e a reestruturação do colágeno no ligamento periodontal.

Abstract Introduction the Covid-19 pandemic impacted elderly persons with Parkinson’s Disease (PD), influencing their daily activities and quality of life. Objective to evaluate the impact on the oral health in people with Parkinson’s Disease during the Covid-19 isolation. Material and method the present analytical, quantitative, cross-sectional study uses secondary data sources from 115 health records used in a study carried out from August to December in 2020 through telemonitoring. Sociodemographic aspects and self-perception of quality of life were evaluated using the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The variables studied in the association were: sex, age, duration of PD, civil status, Covid-19 diagnosis and the use of dental prostheses. The software Statistica 13.2 and the Chi-square (X2) test with a significance level of p<0.05 were used. Result after analyzing the database, the final sample consisted of 64 health records that responded to the OHIP-14. 61% were male, with a mean age of 66.6 years, 64% were using dental prostheses, and 74% indicated on the OHIP-14 that they had good oral health self-perception. No significant associations were found among the variables: Age, Sex, Civil Status, Covid diagnosis, Duration of illness, Use of dental prostheses and the OHIP-14 (p>0.05). Conclusion it was found that people with Parkinson’s Disease showed a good quality of life, as evaluated using the OHIP-14, and that the Covid-19 isolation did not impact negatively on the oral health.

Resumo Introdução a pandemia da Covid-19 impactou idosos que possuem a doença de Parkinson (DP), influenciando nas suas atividades de vida diária e qualidade de vida. Objetivo avaliar o impacto da saúde bucal em pessoas com doença de Parkinson durante o isolamento da Covid-19. Material e método trata-se de um estudo analítico, quantitativo e de corte transversal, com fontes de dados secundários de 115 prontuários de uma pesquisa que foi realizada no ano de 2020, no período de agosto a dezembro, por meio de telemonitoramento. Avaliou-se os aspectos sociodemográfico e a autopercepção da qualidade de vida utilizando o questionário Perfil de Impacto na Saúde Oral (OHIP-14). As variáveis estudadas na associação foram: sexo, idade, tempo da DP, estado civil, diagnóstico de Covid-19 e uso de prótese dentária. Foi utilizado o software Statistica 13.2 e o teste do Qui-quadrado (X2) com nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultado após análise do banco de dados a amostra final constou com 64 prontuários que responderam o OHIP-14. 61% foram do sexo masculino com média de idade de 66,6 anos, 64% faziam uso de prótese dentária, e 74% indicaram ter uma boa autopercepção da sua saúde bucal pelo OHIP-14. Não foram encontradas associações significativas entre as variáveis: Idade; Sexo; Estado Civil; Diagnóstico de Covid; Tempo de doença; Uso de prótese dentária e o OHIP-14 (p>0,05). Conclusão verificou-se que pessoas com Parkinson apresentaram uma boa qualidade de vida avaliado pelo OHIP-14 e que o isolamento da Covid-19 não impactou negativamente na saúde bucal.

Abstract Introduction the use of light emitting diodes (LED) in domestic and public vias have increased in the last 20 years. In addition, the LED light has been used as a light source for medical applications. Objective since humans are increasingly exposed to LEDs, there is an urgency to investigate the possible biological effects on tissues caused by this exposure. So, researchers have been focused their investigations in the application of this light in the health field. Material and method in this review, a search in important databases was performed on the biological effects caused after application of different LED light protocols in in vitro and in vivo studies. Result although most published papers have shown positive results, some of them reported negative biological effects of light LEDs technology on humans’ cells/tissues. Conclusion therefore, the comprehension of the biological effects caused by light LEDs will provide a better assessment of the risks involved using this technology.

Resumo Introdução o uso de diodos emissores de luz (“LED”) em vias domésticas e públicas tem aumentado nos últimos 20 anos. Além disso, a luz LED tem sido usada para aplicações médicas. Objetivo pelo fato de seres humanos estarem cada vez mais expostos aos LEDs, há urgência em investigar os possíveis efeitos biológicos nos tecidos causados por esta exposição. Assim, pesquisadores têm focado suas investigações no uso desta luz na área da saúde. Material e método nesta revisão foi realizada uma pesquisa em bancos de dados conceituados sobre os efeitos biológicos causados após aplicação de diferentes protocolos de luz LED em estudos in vitro e in vivo. Resultado embora a maioria dos artigos publicados tenham mostrado resultados positivos, alguns deles relataram efeitos biológicos negativos da tecnologia de LEDs nas células/tecidos humanos. Conclusão portanto, a compreensão dos efeitos biológicos causados pela luz LED proporcionará uma melhor avaliação dos riscos envolvidos no uso desta tecnologia.

Abstract Introduction Periodontal treatment involves procedures aimed to reduce bacterial load, involving or not the use of local or systemic antibiotics. Objective The purpose of this study was to assess Brazilian dentists’ knowledge about antibiotics prescription during periodontal treatment. Material and method An online questionnaire was available asking for systemic application of local or systemic antibiotics prescription (frequency, and sequence with mechanical periodontal treatment) and in relation to different periodontal diseases. The use of microbial diagnostic services and volunteers’ demographic data were also elucidated. Data were statistically analyzed (Binomial Test, p<0.05). Result Three hundred and ninety-three volunteers answered the questionnaire. Twenty-three percent males and 76.2% females. Average age was 27.7 years. Minority (19.2%) of the volunteers reported to indicate systemic antibiotics to treat gingivitis or periodontitis stages I and II (old slight and moderate chronic periodontitis). Majority of the professionals indicate it to treat periodontal abscess, necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis or periodontitis, periodontitis in severe immunodeficiencies, old aggressive periodontitis, and periodontitis stages III and IV (old severe chronic periodontitis). Rarely (2.5%) the prescription was without the combination with mechanical therapy. Microbiological tests as an auxiliary diagnostic method are rarely (3.1%) requested due to lack of information or cost. Most frequent answers about the number of times professionals reported prescribing systemic antibiotics as part of periodontal treatment per trimester was “at least once”, followed by “2 times”. Conclusion It can be concluded that Brazilian dentists have knowledge about the correct prescription of antibiotics in periodontal therapy.

Resumo Introdução O tratamento periodontal envolve procedimentos que visam reduzir a carga bacteriana, envolvendo ou não o uso de antibióticos locais ou sistêmicos. Objetivo O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o conhecimento dos cirurgiões-dentistas brasileiros sobre a prescrição de antibióticos durante o tratamento periodontal. Material e método Foi disponibilizado um questionário online solicitando aplicação sistêmica de prescrição de antibióticos locais ou sistêmicos (frequência e sequência com tratamento periodontal mecânico) e em relação a diferentes doenças periodontais. A utilização de serviços de diagnóstico microbiano e dados demográficos dos voluntários também foram elucidados. Os dados foram analisados estatisticamente (Teste Binomial, p<0,05). Resultado Trezentos e noventa e três voluntários responderam ao questionário. Vinte e três por cento do sexo masculino e 76,2% do sexo feminino. A idade média foi de 27,7 anos. A minoria (19,2%) dos voluntários relatou indicar antibióticos sistêmicos para tratamento de gengivite ou periodontite estágios I e II (antiga periodontite crônica leve e moderada). A maioria dos profissionais indica para tratar abscesso periodontal, gengivite ou periodontite ulcerativa necrosante, periodontite em imunodeficiências graves, periodontite agressiva antiga e periodontite estágios III e IV (periodontite crônica grave antiga). Raramente (2,5%) a prescrição foi sem a associação com terapia mecânica. Os exames microbiológicos como método auxiliar de diagnóstico raramente (3,1%) são solicitados por falta de informação ou custo. As respostas mais frequentes sobre o número de vezes que os profissionais relataram prescrever antibióticos sistêmicos como parte do tratamento periodontal por trimestre foram “pelo menos uma vez”, seguido de “2 vezes”. Conclusão Pode-se concluir que os cirurgiões-dentistas brasileiros possuem conhecimento sobre a correta prescrição de antibióticos na terapia periodontal.

Abstract Introduction Circulatory system diseases are one of the leading causes of death. Periodontal health is a component of oral and general health that contributes to quality of life. Objective To analyze periodontal conditions and quality of life in patients with circulatory diseases. Material and method Cross-sectional study, with patients with circulatory diseases (n=125). The clinical periodontal examination was performed considering: biofilm, bleeding on probing, suppuration, probing depth, gingival recession, and clinical attachment level. Quality of life was assessed with the Medical Outcomes Study 36 – Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) and Oral Health Impact Profile – short form (OHIP-14). Data were analyzed with parametric and nonparametric tests (α=5%). Result Elderly and men had a greater severity of periodontal disease. The Elderly had lower values in the domains of "Functional capacity" and "Physical aspects" (SF-36). The domain "Pain" had lower values in subjects with health/gingivitis. OHIP-14 did not show differences in the comparisons. There was no correlation between quality of life and the severity of periodontal disease. Conclusion Among patients with circulatory diseases, the elderly and men had greater severity of periodontal disease. The elderly had a poorer quality of life (functional capacity and physical aspects). There was no correlation between the severity of periodontal disease and quality of life.

Resumo Introdução As doenças do aparelho circulatório representam uma das principais causas de mortes. A saúde periodontal é um componente da saúde bucal e saúde geral que contribui para a qualidade de vida. Objetivo Analisar as condições periodontais e a qualidade de vida em pacientes com doenças circulatórias. Material e método Estudo transversal, com pacientes com doenças circulatórias (n=125). O exame clínico periodontal foi realizado considerando: biofilme, sangramento à sondagem, supuração, profundidade de sondagem, recessão gengival e nível de inserção clínica. A qualidade de vida foi avaliada com o Medical Outcomes Study 36 – Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) e Oral Health Impact Profile – short form (OHIP-14). Os dados foram analisados com testes paramétricos e não paramétricos (α=5%). Resultado Idosos e os homens tiveram maior severidade da doença periodontal. Idosos apresentaram menores valores nos domínios “Capacidade funcional” e “Aspectos físicos” (SF-36). O domínio “Dor” teve menor valor nos indivíduos com saúde/gengivite. OHIP-14 não apresentou diferenças nas comparações. Não houve correlação entre qualidade de vida a severidade da doença periodontal. Conclusão Entre os pacientes com doenças circulatórias, os idosos e os homens tiveram maior severidade da doença periodontal. Idosos tiveram pior qualidade de vida (capacidade funcional e aspectos físicos). Não houve correlação entre a severidade da doença periodontal e a qualidade de vida.

Abstract Introduction The concept of quality of life is multidimensional, presents a complex and dynamic organization of its components, and differs from person to person according to the environment/context and even between two people in a similar context. In December 2019, a Coronavirus epidemic emerged in China, aiming to make some changes, including social isolation and distance learning. Objective Evaluate the impact of social isolation and distance learning on the quality of life of undergraduates in the health area at the Federal University of Sergipe. Material and method The quality of life questionnaire, Short-Form Health Survey, was applied to undergraduate students in the health area at the Federal University of Sergipe in January 2021. The questionnaire was applied online. Result 678 questionnaires were applied, with 672 agreeing to participate in the study. According to the evaluated students, 58% were female and 50% were aged from 21 to 25 years. When analyzing the questionnaire, it appears that the values ranged from 80 to 89 for functional capacity, with a good quality of life score. Emotional aspects had the lowest scores from 21 to 37.3, the worst result in speech therapy students. There was no statistically significant difference between the different health courses studied. Conclusion It appears that the emotional aspect has been the most affected among health students at the Federal University of Sergipe.

Resumo Introdução O conceito de qualidade de vida é multidimensional, apresenta uma organização complexa e dinâmica dos seus componentes, difere de pessoa para pessoa de acordo com seu ambiente/contexto e mesmo entre duas pessoas inseridas em um contexto similar. Em dezembro de 2019 surgiu na China uma epidemia pelo coronavírus, surgindo a necessidade de mudanças, incluindo isolamento social e ensino a distância. Objetivo Avaliar o impacto do isolamento social e ensino a distância na qualidade de vida dos graduandos da área da saúde da Universidade Federal de Sergipe. Material e método Foi aplicado aos estudantes de graduação da área de saúde da Universidade Federal de Sergipe, no período de janeiro de 2021, o questionário de qualidade de vida, Short-Form Health Survey. O questionário foi aplicado via o sistema online. Resultado Foram aplicados 678 questionários, sendo 672 concordando em participar do estudo. Dos estudantes avaliados, 58% eram do sexo feminino e 50% com idade de 21 a 25 anos. Ao se analisar o questionário, verifica-se que para capacidade funcional os valores variaram de 80 a 89, ou seja, com bom escore de qualidade de vida. Os aspectos emocionais apresentaram os menores escores e 21 a 37,3, sendo o pior resultado encontrado nos estudantes do curso de fonoaudiologia. Não houve diferença estatisticamente significativa entre os diferentes cursos de saúde estudados. Conclusão Verifica-se que o aspecto emocional tem sido o mais afetado entre os estudantes de saúde da Universidade Federal de Sergipe.

Abstract Introduction The evolution of new techniques, technologies, and materials significantly influences the clinical practice of endodontics, thus profoundly impacting the approach to root canal treatments. While information about various treatment methods practiced by dentists in other cities or countries is available, there is a notable gap in our understanding of endodontic practices in the Porto Alegre city. Objective The objective of this study is to analyze the endodontic practices employed by dentists in dental clinics located in Porto Alegre city. We aimed to explore the techniques, materials, and equipment routinely utilized during endodontic treatments. Material and method An online questionnaire using the Google Forms platform was administered, consisting of twenty-six open and closed questions to dentists performing endodontic treatments in dental clinics. The questionnaire was structured to assess the materials, techniques, and equipment employed during endodontic procedures. Data collected from the questionnaires were recorded in an Excel® spreadsheet. Data analysis encompassed both absolute and relative frequency for closed questions and also a descriptive approach for open-ended questions. Results Participation was obtained from 15.57% of dental clinics registered with CRO/RS. The findings indicated that the majority of materials and techniques applied in endodontic treatment could be aligned with recommendations found in the scientific literature. Conclusion The clinical protocols observed by the participants in endodontic practice demonstrated a solid foundation in both clinical and scientific literature.

Resumo Introdução O desenvolvimento de novas técnicas, tecnologias e materiais influenciam a prática clínica da endodontia e impactam consideravelmente a forma como o tratamento do canal radicular é realizado. Embora existam informações sobre as várias formas de tratamentos praticados por dentistas em outras cidades e/ou países, muito pouco se sabe sobre as endodontias realizadas em clínicas odontológicas na cidade de Porto Alegre/RS. Objetivo Analisar a prática endodôntica realizada por dentistas nas clínicas odontológicas na cidade de Porto Alegre/RS, visando explorar as técnicas, materiais e equipamentos empregados durante o tratamento. Material e método Foi aplicado um questionário online, por meio da Plataforma Google Forms, com vinte e seis questões abertas e fechadas aos dentistas que realizam tratamentos endodônticos em clínicas odontológicas. O questionário foi estruturado a fim de analisar os materiais, técnicas e equipamentos que estão presentes nos tratamentos endodônticos realizados pelos dentistas nas clínicas odontológicas aqui avaliadas. Os dados coletados nos questionários foram transferidos para uma planilha Excel®. A análise dos dados foi feita de duas formas: frequência absoluta e relativa para as questões fechadas, e descritiva para as questões abertas. Resultado 15,57% das clínicas odontológicas registradas no CRO/RS participaram da presente pesquisa. Foi possível verificar que a maioria dos materiais e técnicas aplicadas no tratamento endodôntico são os mesmos recomendados pela literatura científica. Conclusão Os protocolos clínicos em endodontia seguidos pelos participantes do presente estudo apresentam embasamento clínico e científico na literatura.

Abstract Introduction root canal treatment is a challenging procedure often first encountered by undergraduate dental students, leading to various difficulties and mistakes. Objective this study aimed to identify the specific difficulties encountered by undergraduate dental students during root canal treatment and the frequency of mistakes they committed in relation to these difficulties. Material and method this study employed a cross-sectional survey design. A cohort of 60 third-year students completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 27 questions addressing various aspects of endodontic treatment and 11 key areas of root canal procedures. The response options for each question were based on a 4-point Likert scale. Data analysis was performed using Python programming language and heatmaps were created using the seaborn library to better understand the distribution of the data. Result students encounter challenges in developing tactile sensation, accessory cone placement, and accurately reaching the apex during canal location. Dental schools should focus on improving students' tactile skills and methods to reach the apex to enhance the effectiveness of root canal treatment education. In contrast, students reported fewer mistakes in rubber dam application and safety measures during treatment. Dental educators should emphasize proper instrument use and safety precautions during root canal treatment. Interestingly, students did not perceive these areas as problematic despite committing mistakes. Conclusion this study provides valuable insights into the challenges and mistakes encountered by undergraduate dental students during root canal treatment. Dental educators should address these issues to improve students' skills and techniques and provide optimal patient care.

Resumo Introdução o tratamento endodôntico é um procedimento desafiador, frequentemente encontrado pela primeira vez por estudantes de odontologia, levando a diversas dificuldades e erros. Objetivo este estudo teve como objetivo identificar as dificuldades específicas encontradas por estudantes de graduação em Odontologia durante o tratamento endodôntico e a frequência de erros cometidos por eles em relação a essas dificuldades. Material e método este estudo empregou um desenho de pesquisa transversal. Um grupo de 60 estudantes do terceiro ano respondeu a um questionário autoaplicável composto por 27 perguntas abordando vários aspectos do tratamento endodôntico e 11 áreas-chave dos procedimentos de canal radicular. As opções de resposta para cada questão foram baseadas em uma escala Likert de 4 pontos. A análise dos dados foi realizada utilizando a linguagem de programação Python e mapas de calor foram criados utilizando a biblioteca seaborn para melhor compreender a distribuição dos dados. Resultado os alunos encontram desafios no desenvolvimento da sensação tátil, na colocação do cone acessório e no alcance preciso do ápice durante a localização do canal. As escolas de odontologia devem se concentrar em melhorar as habilidades táteis e os métodos dos alunos para alcançar o ápice e aumentar a eficácia do ensino sobre tratamento de canal radicular. Em contrapartida, os estudantes relataram menos erros na aplicação do dique de borracha e nas medidas de segurança durante o tratamento. Os educadores odontológicos devem enfatizar o uso adequado dos instrumentos e as precauções de segurança durante o tratamento do canal radicular. Curiosamente, os alunos não consideraram estas áreas problemáticas, apesar de cometerem erros. Conclusão este estudo fornece informações valiosas sobre os desafios e erros encontrados por estudantes de odontologia durante o tratamento endodôntico. Os educadores odontológicos devem abordar essas questões para melhorar as habilidades e técnicas dos alunos e fornecer o melhor atendimento ao paciente.

Abstract Introduction the starts of oral hygiene after the first tooth eruption is the most current recommendation. However, there are differences of opinion regarding whether or not oral hygiene is necessary for edentulous babies. Objective to evaluate the maternal practices of oral hygiene of babies under 6 months of age. Material and method a digital form was applied containing 4 questions about sociodemographic information and 4 specific questions. Descriptive statistical analysis was performed and the results were statistically compared between children who received and did not receive oral hygiene before 6 months of age. Result it can be observed that the age, education and family income of mothers who performed oral hygiene before the eruption of the first tooth was higher than that of mothers who did not perform this type of hygiene. The age of the children, age of eruption of the first tooth, whether they received professional guidance and type of breastfeeding did not differ between the groups. Conclusion there is still a large portion of mothers who perform oral hygiene of edentulous babies.

Resumo Introdução a recomendação mais atual é de que a higiene bucal deve ser iniciada após a erupção do primeiro dente. Porém, há divergência de opiniões a respeito da necessidade ou não da higiene bucal do bebê desdentado. Objetivo avaliar as práticas maternas de higienização bucal dos bebês menores de 6 meses de idade. Material e método foi aplicado um formulário digital contendo quatro questões sobre informações sociodemográficas e quatro questões específicas. Foi realizada análise estatística descritiva, e os resultados foram comparados estatisticamente entre as crianças que receberam e não receberam higiene bucal antes dos 6 meses de idade. Resultado pode-se observar que a idade, a escolaridade e a renda familiar das mães que realizavam higiene bucal de seus filhos antes da erupção do primeiro dente foram maiores do que das mães que não realizavam esse tipo de higiene. A idade das crianças, a idade de erupção do primeiro dente, o recebimento de orientações profissionais e o tipo de aleitamento não diferiram entre os grupos. Conclusão ainda há uma grande parcela de mães que realiza higiene bucal dos bebês edêntulos.

Abstract Introduction The importance of roughness for osseointegration is due to the configuration of proteins with the surface of the implant, and adsorption. Different methods are used in surface treatments, in which parts of the surface layer are removed, such as acid attack. Objective To analyze changes in roughness on the surface of osseointegrated implants treated by double acid etching with single-use and up to 4 reuses of serums at a magnification of 500x, 1000x, 2000x, and 4000x in the scanning microscope (SEM). Method Samples of adherent implants (SINGULAR Implants ®) of lever alloy (n=10) were subdivided into 5 groups: control, treatment 1, 2, 3, and 4, according to the reuses. For the surface topography of the samples, SEM was used, followed by analysis by ImageJ software. Using the ANOVA test and Turkeys post-test, Ra and Rq values were statistically analyzed. Result The data obtained both by the images captured in the SEM and by the Ra and Rq numbers acquired by the ImageJ illustrate that the treatment with the double acid attack with 5 uses of the same ones served, was positive for the surface treatment of the alloy implant of independent. Conclusion It can be concluded that up to four reuses of food do not statistically interfere with roughness values. More studies are needed regarding the reuse of acids, certainly to reduce costs to manufacturers, increasing sustainability while maintaining product quality.

Resumo Introdução A importância da rugosidade para a osseointegração se dá pela correlação das interações das proteínas com a superfície do implante, a adsorção. Diferentes métodos são utilizados nos tratamentos de superfície, em que ocorre a remoção de partes da camada superficial, como o ataque ácido. Objetivo Analisar as alterações de rugosidade na superfície dos implantes osseointegrados tratadas por duplo ataque ácido com uso único e até quatro reutilizações dos ácidos. Material e método As amostras de implantes dentários de liga de titânio (SINGULAR Implants ®) (n = 10) foram subdividas em cinco grupos: controle, tratamento 1, 2, 3 e 4, conforme as reutilizações dos ácidos. As capturas dos implantes no aumento de 500x, 1000x, 2000x e 4000x foram realizadas no microscópio eletrônico de varredura, para posterior análise de rugosidade pelo software ImageJ. Os valores de Ra e Rq foram analisados estatisticamente pelo teste ANOVA e o pós-teste de Tukey. Resultado Os dados obtidos pelas imagens capturadas e pelos números de Ra e Rq adquiridos pelo ImageJ demonstraram que o tratamento com o duplo ataque ácido com cinco utilizações dos mesmos ácidos foi positivo para o tratamento de superfície do implante de liga de titânio. Conclusão Pode-se concluir que até quatro reutilizações dos ácidos não interferiu estatisticamente nos valores de rugosidade em diferentes aumentos. São necessários mais estudos referentes à reutilização dos ácidos, contribuindo para a diminuição dos custos aos fabricantes, aumentando a sustentabilidade e mantendo-se a qualidade do produto.

Abstract Introduction the caregiver's demand to meet the needs of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can influence their quality of life. Objective the objective of the present study was to compare the burden on caregivers of individuals with ASD with individuals neurotypical (N) and to evaluate the correlation of the impact of oral health with the burden on these caregivers. Material and method participants were divided into two groups: ASD Group (ASD; n=35) and Neurotypical Group (N; n=35). A sociodemographic characteristics questionnaire was administered to caregivers. Caregiver burden was measured using the Burden Interview (BI) questionnaire. The visible plaque index (VPI) of children was analyzed. The data were submitted to statistical analysis (α=5%). Result in the group ASD, the majority of participants were partially dependent, with the majority being dependent on oral hygiene. In group N, the majority were independent and self-sufficient in oral hygiene. Half of the caregivers in the group ASD felt mild to moderate burden (54.3%), while in group N it was found that more than half of them had no burden (65.7%). In the comparative analysis of data from the BI questionnaire, significant differences were observed between the groups in questions (p <0.001), which are directly related to childcare. Regarding the VPI of children in the group ASD and N groups compared to the level of burden, it was observed that there were no significant differences between the groups. Conclusion ASD caregivers have a greater burden when compared to N caregivers and the degree of burden did not influence the oral hygiene of the child with ASD.

Resumo Introdução a demanda do cuidador em atender as necessidades de indivíduos com transtorno do espectro autista (TEA), pode influenciar na sua qualidade de vida. Objetivo o objetivo do presente estudo foi comparar a sobrecarga de cuidadores de indivíduos com TEA com indivíduos neurotípicos (N) e avaliar a correlação do impacto da saúde bucal com a sobrecarga desses cuidadores. Material e método os participantes foram divididos em dois grupos: Grupo TEA (TEA; n=35) e Grupo Neurotípico (N; n=35). Foi aplicado aos cuidadores um questionário de características sociodemográficas. A sobrecarga dos cuidadores foi medida pelo questionário Burden Interview (BI). Foi analisado o índice de placa visível (IPV) das crianças. Os dados foram submetidos a análise estatística (α=5%). Resultado no grupo TEA a maioria dos participantes eram parcialmente dependentes, sendo a maioria dependentes na higienização bucal. No grupo N a maioria eram independentes e autossuficientes na higienização bucal. Metade dos cuidadores do grupo TEA apresentaram sobrecargas leve à moderada (54,3%). No grupo N constatou-se que a maioria enquadrava-se em nenhuma sobrecarga (65,7%). Na análise comparativa dos dados do questionário BI foram observadas diferenças significantes entre os grupos nas questões (p<0,001) que são diretamente relacionadas com os cuidados com os filhos. Com relação ao IPV das crianças do grupo TEA e N comparadas ao nível de sobrecarga, observou-se que não houve diferenças significativas entre os grupos. Conclusão os cuidadores do grupo TEA apresentam maior sobrecarga quando comparados ao grupo N e não houve correlação entre a sobrecarga e o grau de higiene bucal.

Abstract Introduction Different methodologies were used for histological evaluation of osseointegration, leading to different results. Objective The objective is to compare different methodologies for histomorphometric analysis of the osseointegration of implants with different surfaces, installed in rat tibias. Material and method Twenty-four rats were randomly divided into 3 groups (n=8) for implant installation. These groups were divided according to the type of implant that will be installed in the tibia: Hydrophilic Group (installation of an implant with a surface modified by oxide blasting and acid attack and maintained in a sodium chloride solution), Hydrophobic Group (installation of an implant with surface modified by oxide blasting and acid attack) and Machined Group (implant installation with machined surface). Within 45 days after the surgical procedures to install the implants, the animals were euthanized and the tibias were removed, and histological processing was carried out for non-decalcified samples. After obtaining the slides, histomorphometric analysis was performed to evaluate the percentages of bone-implant contact (%BIC) and the bone area between the turns (%BBT). Measurements were carried out in two different regions: 1) the implant threads in the cortical bone region and 2) all implant threads inserted into the bone (cortical and medullary). Statistical analysis was performed using One-Way ANOVA followed by Tukey's test for inferential data analysis. Result The BIC and BBT were analyzed independently in the cortical and trabecular/total regions, a difference was observed in the histological behavior of the implants according to the surface treatment. HFL implants showed trabecular BIC (%) 16.85% higher (p=0.02) than HFB implants and 26.12% higher (p≤0.0001) than machined implants. However, the cortical region of all groups showed significantly higher cortical BIC values around the implants, regardless of the surface. Conclusion the results obtained demonstrated that peri-implant bone formation was superior in analyzes carried out only on cortical bone, compared to the values obtained in the total measurement (cortical bone plus medullary bone). It was also possible to observe that, even within the same surface, the BIC(%) values were higher in cortical bone. Within the limitations of the study, it can be concluded that different methodologies for histometric analysis of osseointegration around different surfaces of implants installed in rat tibias can interfere with the results of osseointegration regardless of the surface analyzed.

Resumo Introdução Diferentes metodologias tem sido utilizadas para avaliação histológica da osseointegração, levando a diferentes resultados. Objetivo O objetivo é comparar diferentes metodologias de análise histomorfométrica da osseointegração de implantes com diferentes superfícies, instalados em tíbias de ratos. Material e método 24 ratos foram aleatoriamente divididos em 3 grupos (n = 8) para a instalação dos implantes. Esses grupos foram divididos de acordo com o tipo de implante instalado na tíbia: Grupo Hidrofílico - HFL (instalação de implante com superfície modificada por jateamento de óxidos e ataque ácido e mantida em solução de cloreto de sódio), Grupo Hidrofóbico - HFB (instalação de implante com superfície modificada por jateamento de óxidos e ataque ácido) e Grupo Usinado - U (instalação de implante com superfície usinada). No período de 45 dias após os procedimentos cirúrgicos de instalação dos implantes, os animais foram submetidos à eutanásia, e as tíbias foram removidas, sendo realizado o processamento histológico para amostras não descalcificadas. Após a obtenção das lâminas, foi realizada a análise histomorfométrica para avaliar as porcentagens de contato osso-implante (% BIC) e da área óssea entre as espiras (% BBT). As mensurações foram realizadas em duas diferentes regiões: 1) as roscas do implante na região do osso cortical e 2) todas as roscas do implante inseridas no osso (cortical e medular). A análise estatística foi feita por meio de ANOVA One-Way, seguida pelo teste de Tukey para análise inferencial dos dados. Resultado Quando o BIC e o BBT foram analisados de forma independente nas regiões cortical e trabecular/total, observou-se uma diferença no comportamento histológico dos implantes de acordo com o tratamento de superfície. Os implantes HFL apresentaram BIC (%) trabecular 16,85% maior (p = 0,02) do que os implantes HFB e 26,12% maior (p ≤ 0,0001) do que os implantes usinados. Contudo, a região cortical de todos os grupos apresentou valores de BIC cortical significativamente maiores ao redor dos implantes, independentemente da superfície. Conclusão Os resultados obtidos demonstraram que a formação óssea peri-implantar foi superior nas análises realizadas apenas em osso cortical, se comparados aos valores obtidos na mensuração total (osso cortical somado ao medular). Também foi possível observar que, dentro da mesma superfície, os valores de BIC (%) foram superiores em osso cortical. Em relação às limitações do estudo, pode-se concluir que diferentes metodologias de análise histométrica da osseointegração ao redor de diferentes superfícies de implantes instalados em tíbias de ratos podem interferir nos resultados de osseointegração, independentemente da superfície analisada.
